Twitter alternative Hive reaches 1 million users

After Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, many users have abandoned the site in favor of alternatives like Mastodon, a free and open-source alternative to Twitter, and CounterSocial, a specialized social networking program. In light of the recent events on Twitter, new users are flocking to a different social platform called Beehive. As the situation develops on Twitter, the app saw a rise in fresh interest over the weekend and is now in the top 20 in the US App Store.

Hive, founded in 2019 by 22-year-old Cassandra Pop, is not a carbon copy of Twitter. Instead, the social app aimed at Generation Z, called Hive, was profiled in Teen Vogue last year and characterized as a mashup of Instagram, Twitter, and even MySpace (the latter owing to a feature that enables Hive users to contribute music to their accounts).

The software is wider than a linear timeline format like Twitter. In addition to the main feed, users of Hive may also join communities centered on a wide variety of topics, including but not limited to science, technology, automobiles, music, fashion, pets, crafts, literature, travel, gaming, art, cuisine, and many more. Similar to other social networks, users may here like, comment, and repost the shared material, as well as click on hashtags to learn more.

If you’re a Twitter user looking for a new home, you might find yourself more at ease on Hive, thanks to its straightforward and familiar navigation options. The app has tabs for viewing the main timeline or feed, a “Discover” section for exploring the social network, a charge for accessing your profile, and another tab for your notifications, among other things. An insert-new-message button sits smack in the center.

Similar to Twitter, Hive operates on a “follower” approach rather than the “friend” paradigm seen on sites like Facebook.

On the other hand, Hive uses a chronological feed, does not use customization algorithms, and does not sell advertising space. Instead, Hive allows users to pay to get access to more spaces, expanding the number of songs they may include on their profile. According to the app’s description on the App Store, they start at $0.99 for a second space and go up to $1.99 for a third or fourth.

In the weeks preceding and after Musk purchased Twitter, Hive saw significant growth. App analytics firm Sensor Tower reports that out of a total of 733,000 installations on iOS and Android, roughly 214,000 have come in the last 30 days alone for Hive. It’s worth noting that Hive hasn’t only been catching the interest of individuals in the United States; according to Sensor Tower, around 86 percent of Hive’s downloads come from outside the United States.

Data.ai figures are similar to Sensor Tower’s, with over 720,000 lifetime installations as of November 20; however, Data.ai estimates a greater percentage (370,000) of installs originating from the United States. Another influx of users signed up for the app during the weekend, beginning on Friday.

It was at this time that Musk unlocked the account of former President Donald Trump, maybe not coincidentally. Musk’s action has encouraged even more Twitter users to explore alternatives as they ponder switching ship, despite the fact that Trump has not yet tweeted, reportedly preferring his own program Truth Social.

According to information collected by Sensor Tower, Hive has had around 144,000 fresh installations in the last few days (Friday, November 18 through Sunday, November 20, 2022). It claims that the United States is responsible for 22,000 such installations. It also rose from being the 338th most popular iPhone app in the US App Store to become the 17th most popular app right now, throughout this time period. It is ranked number seventeen in the United Kingdom and number twenty-four in Canada.

According to Sensor Tower, the app ranked third overall and third in the social networking category in the United States.

Reports on Hive’s TikTok state that the app broke after 80,000 new users joined up to watch it over the weekend. An estimated “almost 900,000” people have been using Hive since this morning, according to the app’s official Twitter account. (This estimate doesn’t quite square with Sensor Tower’s, but it’s important to remember that data from outside sources can’t be relied upon for accuracy.)
