Why was Fortnite removed from the App Store?
In 2020, Fortnite was removed from the iOS App Store because it violated Apple’s App Store guidelines.
Fortnite is coming to iPhone again in those 27 countries. Epic Games attempted to introduce new charging technology for in-game purchases on the mobile variant of Fortnite. Brand new technologies would have allowed customers to make cheaper in-app purchases, as it bypassed Apple’s (also Google’s) app store cuts. However, both Apple and Google removed Fortnite from their respective digital stores within hours, sparking a legal war with Epic that has now ended.
Despite the fact that Epic was unsuccessful in its fight against Apple, the US court forced the iPhone maker to offer a third-party fee solution. The company fared better than Google, with the court prevailing against Google and striking down the tech giant’s practices as monopolistic.
As the EU’s Digital Markets Act goes into effect March 7, developers will be allowed to distribute apps on iOS outside of Apple’s App Store and receive billings. But Apple still requires those apps to go through their “notarization” approval process, in addition to human and automated checks.
Epic’s CEO, Tim Sweeney, criticized Apple’s restrictions and regulations, calling them “hot bullshit”. However, this is allowing Epic to bring back Fortnite on the iPhone. Epic says it will continue to fight against Apple, arguing that “Apple is breaking the law.”
