A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) filing states that Tesla recalls over 40,000 vehicles because the power steering assist may be lost when driving over potholes or bumps. This is the latest problem to plague the electric carmaker as it faces increasing regulatory scrutiny following recalls affecting millions of vehicles this year.
Over 321,000 Tesla vehicles are being recalled due to a software issue that might cause the taillights to shine incorrectly (via Reuters). A filing with the NHTSA indicates that the recall affects some Model 3s and Model Ys manufactured in 2023.
According to Tesla, a problem “that may create erroneous defect detections during the vehicle wake-up process” might cause the car’s rear lights to “intermittently illuminate.” However, Tesla has not received any complaints of injuries or accidents due to this issue, despite the NHTSA’s warning that it might “raise the danger of a collision” in low light. Over-the-air (OTA) software updates had been Tesla’s standard method of dealing with recalls up until this one, which affects the Model 3’s seat belt buckles.
The electric car manufacturer has already issued their nineteenth recall of 2018. Just last week, Tesla issued a recall for over 30,000 Model X cars due to a problem that might cause the front passenger airbag to activate incorrectly in “low-speed” crashes, which could cause damage to a young kid sitting in the front seat. More than 40,000 Model X and S vehicles were recalled due to a steering issue that might result in the loss of power steering on rough roads or after striking a pothole.
IMPORTANT BACKGROUND
In recent years, Tesla has been plagued with recalls, and the company is under increased scrutiny from authorities across the globe. Vehicles have been recalled in recent years because of issues with the rearview camera, the trunk, the touchscreen, and the windows. Elon Musk, the automaker’s billionaire CEO, has staunchly defended the firm against claims it is neglecting its safety commitments and is not taking the subject seriously. Musk has insisted that Tesla goes above and above what authorities require. Musk has also taken issue with the word “recall” for the problems, calling it “outdated” because of the prevalence of software updates as an alternative to taking vehicles in for repairs.
3.4 million is a HUGE NUMBER. According to Reuters, it is the total number of vehicles affected by Tesla’s 17 recall efforts in 2022.
The functioning of Tesla is something to keep an eye on. During Tuesday morning’s pre-market trade, Tesla shares were down 1.4%. Due to the news of more recalls, Tesla stock has also dropped. The company’s stock has dropped by almost half since this time last year. The total value of the corporation on the stock market is around $655 billion.
